Some cartoons may be meant for the public at-large, and others are targeted for a specific industry and contain lots of insider jargon. Either approach is fun, and both require doing some up-front research to ensure the jokes land correctly.

Quite often, multiple carefully chosen images are necessary to illustrate a complex idea or service. Taking the time to understand the concept, finding (or creating) the right images, and combining them in an artful way is critical to telling a complete story.
